چکیده

The quenched solid density functional theory (QSDFT) is employed to study methane adsorption on coal at geological conditions. Themain focus is made on coal deformation in the course of adsorption that may result in either expansion/swelling or contraction, depending upon the pressure, temperature, and pore size. Twoqualitatively different types of deformation behaviorwere found depending upon the porewidth. Type I shows a monotonic expansion in the whole pressure range. This behavior is characteristic for the smallest pores<1.3σff (0.5 nm) that cannot accommodatemore than one layer of methane. Type II displays contraction at low pressures followed by expansion. Type II behavior was found for several groups of pores, which can accommodate dense packingwith an integer number (from 2 to 6) of adsorbed layers. The results of the QSDFT model are compared to literature experimental data, and the model is employed to study the adsorption behavior of model coals at elevated pressures and temperatures. We established the relationships between themethane capacity and the solvation pressure that it exerts on the coal matrix and the depth of coal bed for pores of different sizes. We found that the coal deformation depends upon the bed depth, and at different depths, it either swells or contracts depending upon the pore size distribution. The implications of these findings for evaluating coal gas resources and coal mine recovery are discussed.

Adsorption and strain: The CO2-induced swelling of coal

Enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBM) consists in injecting carbon dioxide in coal bed methane reservoirs in order to facilitate the recovery of the methane. The injected carbon dioxide gets adsorbed at the surface of the coal pores, which causes the coal to swell. This swelling in confined conditions leads to a closure of the coal reservoir cleat system, which hinders further injection. In...

Numerical Simulation of CO2 Flooding of Coalbed Methane Considering the Fluid-Solid Coupling Effect

CO2 flooding of coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) not only stores CO2 underground and reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances the gas production ratio. This coupled process involves multi-phase fluid flow and coal-rock deformation, as well as processes such as competitive gas adsorption and diffusion from the coal matrix into fractures. A dual-porosity medium that consists of a matrix and f...

Characterization of Coal Porosity for Naturally Tectonically Stressed Coals in Huaibei Coal Field, China

The enrichment of coalbed methane (CBM) and the outburst of gas in a coal mine are closely related to the nanopore structure of coal. The evolutionary characteristics of 12 coal nanopore structures under different natural deformational mechanisms (brittle and ductile deformation) are studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. The results indicate...

Determination and assessment of coal bed methane potential using rock engineering systems

The presence of methane in coal mines is one of the major problems in underground coal mines. Every year, in underground coal mines, a lot of casualties due to outbursts and explosions of methane gas is occurring. Existence of this gas in the mines not only creates a difficult and dangerous situation for work but also makes it more expensive. The release of this gas to the air causes a further ...
